Location: South of Phoenix
Trail Rating: 2.0
Description:

This is an easy trail suitable for stock Jeeps and SUVs; good for beginners. Some hill terrain through the Maricopa Mountain range. Trail is about 12 miles, takes 2 hours and traces the Butterfield stagecoach route of the 1850's via historical markers.

Here is a little history and why it is interesting:
In 1850 John Butterfield, Henry Wells and William Fargo (“Wells-Fargo”) formed a shipping company they named American Express Company (now the large travel-related, financial and banking outfit). Later in 1857, John Butterfield won the U.S. contract to deliver the mail from Missouri to San Francisco in 25 days. The Butterfield Stage Route trail listed here is a remnant of the Arizona portion of that 2,800-mile freight, mail and passenger stagecoach route. It employed 800+ people, had 139 stops, 1,800 horses and mules, and around 250 stagecoaches, making 2 trips a week. One-way passenger fare was $200 (a fortune back then.)

.Remember to Tread lightly!

How to Get There:
From Phoenix, take Interstate 10 East, take Exit 162 to Highway 347 (heading South), then at Maricopa take highway 238 (going West). Go about 23 miles, then exit North to dirt road near mile marker 19. Look for Butterfield Stage Route signs.
